Olympus' new premium 25mm f1.2 - A true dream lens

Olympus' new premium 25mm f1.2 - A true dream lens

As a long time user of m43, I write this post with hesitation. I hesitate as I expect many folks will point out exception(s) to my thoughts and offer up lenses that are currently available that fill most of my, and potentially, our needs. I write this as dedicated user of m43. I write this having owned, or owning, the best lenses that m43 has offered to date.

With the launch of the new Olympus 25 f1.2 and coupled with the Panasonic 42.5 f1.2 & 12 f1.4, it has become incredibly apparent to me that a few critical premium lenses are missing. So much so that it impacts my willingness to spend any more money on m43. I want to. The m43 platform offers me the most versatile platform available all while providing the option for the smallest possible kit if so desired.  It just doesn't offer the one or two lenses of premium quality in the focal lengths that I personally love and shoot the most.

For me, there are two critical autofocus lenses missing, a true premium 17mm and a true premium 14mm that is designed as a smaller pancake style of lens. I write this having owned the Panasonic 15 f1.7, the Olympus 17mm f1.8, the Panasonic 20mm ff1.7 and the Panasonic 14mm f2.5. I have gotten incredible photos with each of those lenses, but none of these lenses are true premium quality.

Each lens currently available in these focal length areas offers incredible image quality but they are far from perfect.  All of the currently available lenses have shortcomings in one or more area of CA, distortion or out of focus areas that don't have a smooth transition or poor out of focus rendering.  They are good. Just not great.  Having owned the Panasonic 42.5 and Olympus 75 f1.8 and shot Leica lenses for a year and experiencing first hand the image quality that is possible from a premium lense, I just believe there can be, and should be, higher quality 28mm and 35mm equivalent lenses.

I want more from my m43. I want both of these lenses and don't want zooms that cover this range. I want the best lenses for the my preferred kit.  I want a super small and good enough kit and I want the option to have the best lenses and overall image quality available if needed.  I want it all!
